I thought I'd put up something different today for us horse players maybe we can pick this thread up a little and there's a few more stories out there. If you got one lets hear it when it happens.
Yesterday Friday 10/2 I was gonna post this horse for you to play and I talked myself out of it because I have lost on him before and think I might of even given him out as a loser one time here. Anyways let me go back to August 5th Arlington Park as most of you know my uncle is a teller at Arlington and always calls me up or stops by with his so called tip horses that this owner or that trainer gave him you know how that is. Well If I dont play the dam horse and he wins Ill kick myself in the ass and never hear the end of it from him so always try to put something on it anyways. August 5th uncle says bet " Lucky Merlot" in the 6th trainer says he cant lose. Okay no problem went out of my way to play him went off at 20.40:1 nice price well he closed nice kinda got pinched and ended up 4th there went 50 bucks. Oh well maybe next time. Next time was August 28th of course got the call from the uncle play him again ,todays the day. Okay grab my brother and uncle run to OTB play the horse again and also in a ton of gimmicks he goes off at 33.10:1 and well lets just say this he's still running! my comment after the race was Im not playing that goat again untill they drop him to 5000 claimers period he's a loser. Next start September 18th now they put him on the grass well you can beat me twice but not three times did not play him and I must also add uncle did not call me touting the horse either. This race he went off at 76:1 failed to menace and I felt like a winner not playing him! Here we go again the uncle went out of his way to stop by the house the other night Wednesday to fill me in on the new nonsense saying " you know lucky Merlot is running Friday again" I said " I know it your not gonna tell me to play him again are you?"  " Yea you have to the trainer came up to me said this is it he will win Friday and I would like you to go to Hawthorne so you can be in the winners circle and get your picture taken"  Cmon I said is it fixed or what? The guy wouldnt leave my house untill I promised him I would play the horse so I said okay allready Ill go play the pig one more time but thats it then Im done with him. Well I must admit they were putting him in the right spot finally dropping him down to 5000 dollar claimers non winners of three lifetime putting up the jockey Compton that hadnt road him since his last win 10 races ago they were back at Hawthorne where he last won so it all looked real good. Made a few phone calls gave him out one more time praying I didnt look like and idiot once again and made my way to OTB yesterday.  Heres the stats: Horse (Lucky Merlot) 33 lifetime starts only 2 career wins, trainer (Salvino) 35 starts this year only 1 winner a whopping .03 percentage! the horses last ten races his odds at post read like this 76,33,20,19,16,14,12,20,22,and last win at 19.50:1 Im thinking okay time to get all my money back and then some should get at least 8 to 1 right? Horse opens up at 6:5! goes off at 2.50:1  actually pissed me off because on paper theres no way you play this horse! I see all these new faces at OTB folks I havent seen in 10 years there ,my stupid uncle went out and gave this horse to every single living person that he knew that ever bet a horse in there life and they all came there to play it. Its like WTF you doing man no wonder hes only 2:1 my goodness. My uncle stood to look like a total jackass thats for sure and yes he even showed up to bet the nag so he would of got a real beating if horse didnt win. Well He won payed a whopping 7 dollars and you would of thought they were running the kentucky derby when the gates opened I swear everyone there bet this horse! Sure I was happy about the win but old uncle keeps beating me on the back saying "who's the best big guy" " you are Rog" I said.  Not to sound greedy but heres my problem with the whole story, and Ill just use 50 bucks as and example. I bet 50 bucks August 5th loser (-50) I bet 50 more August 28th loser (-50, and now -100 total) Now I bet 50 once again and get back 175 on the ticket minus my 50 dollar investment for a three race total profit of 25 bucks! Oh minus 6 dollars per racing form I spent all three trips now Im up 7 bucks! cant forget about gas maybe 7 bucks now Im even, cant forget 6 beers everytime I run to OTB at 3.50 a pop so 18 X 3.50 = $63.00 now Im out money! I wont even add up all the gimmicks I lost with the horse the first two times I played him. I got your " whos the best" how about next time keep your fricken mouth shut and dont tell the world about it and maybe we could of got 7 or 8 to one on the horse!  This race almost makes me believe horse racing is fixed I swear.   After the 6th race Im convinced. Remember I said up above Salvino the trainer was 1 win 35 starts on the season? Well in the 6th his brother trains a horse Icandazzle who hasnt won last 12 races and this trainer is 0 for 9 on the season so combined the two boys were 1 for 44! Yep winner he was paying 13.20 which is more like it.  Good old unc sitting next to me says " I had that one but didnt give it out just played it for myself"  Why you MF'er . I love my uncle (sort of) but hate track tellers I really do. Is horse racing fixed? you tell me.
By the way guys dont use tellers at the track if you dont have to please learn the machines. Did you ever notice how tellers always give you back your dollar bills first on a winning ticket then fumble around for the loose change? 60% of players say "keep the change" that adds up to alot of money in a day yet alone for the year. Heres another one of there tricks : You got 7 horses in the race right, A teller might get 100 or so folks through there line on any given race. First guy comes up teller says " Hey I got a tip on the 1 horse" next guy "hey I got a tip on the 2 horse" next sucker "hey there telling me the 3 is gonna win" get the picture? he gives out 1 through 7 every 7 players if he deals with 100 folks per race he just gave out the winner 14 times and looks like a hero especially if its a longshot and hopes for tips. Naturally every player in line would have to play his so called tip horse which they dont but Ill bet he gets few suckers every race. God if my uncle only knew I was talking about tellers this way he'd dis-own me. Then where would I get my next tip horse from? Better keep my mouth shut.  Rosie

Great story Rosie. I learned a long time ago to never play tips from trainers or jockeys. Heck, they may be telling you the truth that they're "trying" on that day but what people never consider is that other trainers and jockeys in the race are "trying" too. It's about spoptting the horse at the right conditions at the right price. I take tips from handicappers I respect. That's it. A good trainer will have a good handicapper as a sidekick to tell him where and when to enter his horse. Many trainers don't and are clueless when it comes to "spotting" their horses. The good ones either can handicap themselves or have that handicapper to guide them.

Here's a little story for ya going on right now. About a month or two ago my track buddy who's not much of a handicapper is tired of handicapping toward the end of the day so he's just sitting around reading the Telly waiting for me to do the handicapping. He finds this advertisement for a Horse Tourney at the Orleans in Vegas from 10/1 to 10/3. So happens he just booked his Vegas trip. Where's he stayin'? The Orleans. When's he gonna be there? 9/30 to 10/5. So we hatch a plan. I'll handicap. He'll put the horses in. With a little luck we're gonna knock down a big Tourney right?!

Well today is day 3 of the Tourney. Rules are pick 12 win bets each day from Major designated tracks. How are we doin'? Well I'm Ofer 15! (I let my buddy pick the others). Ofer 15! I go ofer 15 about once every two years. Already gave him 7 horses for today tellin' him not to play them if they went off less than 5-1.

See if I can go 0-22. Bigga Shots from Beantown take Vegas by storm. Yikes!

I love those tourney stories Michelagelo ,not as easy it it sounds thats for sure. Ref and I went out every year to Hilton "pick the poinies" absolutely loved it,just a great time being in Vegas and for 15 hours aday think about nothing but horse racing. It would take me a while to tell you all are stories from are 75$ winner that the Ref picked to the horse that just stood in the gate didnt budge and to this day have never seen a horse do that again! I believe they call it "Dwelt" well thats not the word here the assistant starter had to actually go pull on the horse to get him to leave the stall. I swear Ref and I are still laughing about that one and couldnt wait for the "cock"tail waitress to come around! Then theres the horse that went off at 25 to 1 that we didnt get in in time that naturally won and would of put us in the top ten. All in all a riot and worth doing again.
We did take 17th place one year won a grand I believe and had are names in neon lights going around the Hilton ticker tape which was kinda cool. Also the year we switched hotels to play Breeders Cup and missed my wifes bosses horse "Singeltary" running in the Breeders cup and of course he won paying over 50 bucks!
I know this, we will never switch hotels again free room or not it was a big mistake and cost us more than a free room. The wifes still wont let us live that one down and surprised the REF didnt get divorced over it! The topper was we let the wifes come out once with us which we usually dont do and Ref and I spent numerous hours studying the derby only to watch are horses spit the bit and not hit the board ,while the wives picked three horses Giacomo ( which I commented doesnt have a prayer) Afleet Alex and I forgot the other name but anyways they didnt get there bet in on the tri just a simple 3 horse box and you quessed it  all three came in!! I think the tri payed about 60 grand instead of crying I threw the form in the air and laughed my ass off for and hour. I think old Ref is still laughing at me laughing so loud I actually made a scene. Im really surprised they had enough beer in that casino that day/night for me to consume.
One  more story : about a month ago went to Arlington with Ref and a tri came in paid 37 thousand dollars I looked at the form after the race told Dave nobody in there right mind could bet that tri unless it was your fricken house number. Well Dave looks up yes sir there  it was his house number if you can believe that!  I thought he was gonna choke on his cigar.   I got a few more beleive me but Ill save them I need to go outside to finish laughing damn dog is barking at me!
Crazy ass sport thats for sure.  Ah one more for ya. Went to OTB oh maybe three years back played a turf race at the Fairgrounds boxed 4 horses in the tri cost me 48 bucks I sit back down look at the top of the page and it says quarenteed 50 thousand dollar super-fecta in this race. I said to myself well I should probably go box these same four horses in the super  but was more interested in waiting for gal to come around because my beer was empty. Expensive beer to say the least they ran 1-2-3-4 caught the tri for 3700 should of been happy as a lark right? Fuck no, the beer cost me 57 thousand on the super-fecta!!  I barfed all the way home and actually quit drinking for a week. Still pisses me off

OK Rosie. Here ya go. Giacomo? 60 grand tri? Nope. Try 118000. How do I know. 'Cause before the Big races I always handicap like a sonnofabitch 'cause I know on those days when the bets are comingled and the tracks all accross the country are filled with people makin' bets who haven't got a clue. That leads to longshots who should be contenders and payoffs in the tris and supers that are beyond big if you can get the longshot home. So I handicap for the longshot, then key over any other horse in the race that I think even remotely has a chance of hitting the board.

Well anyway the day Giacomo won, I had him handicapped as my key horse (posted him here). But I hadn't for sure figured who I was gonna use behind him. Course you know that race goes late in the day and that's one day we make sure we go early to get a table. We get there and my buddy runs into a good friend of his who is with about six other guys. So we all sit together. Well wouldn't ya know we're knockin' down winners race after race. Longshots too. So everybody is buyin' everybody else rounds. There's all kinds of whoopin' and yellin goin' on at the table. I'm gettin' stifty and we're just havin' a great old time laughin' and storytellin'. Next thing ya know it's Belmont time and my brain is mush. I've got a ton of their money and my handicapping seriousness got washed away a few races earlier. I'm tryin' to put the finishin' touches on those horses to use on the back end of that tri but I'm failin'. Just too stifty and way too many distractions. So I just go bet the horse 50 accross the board. Of course the sumovabitch wins and of course I had the horses who ran 2nd and 3rd marked in my telly.

So everyone else is goin' crazy 'cause I've got the winner, huge price, and big tickets and all. But me, I know my truth. I blew it. My big chance at $118,000.00 washed away in the revelry of a bunch of guys partyin' hard with money won.

Sometimes ya can't win for winnin'.

ok
how about this story?
rosie and i at the otb a little farther than we normally go!
reason why is we brought the wives along and they naturally went to the river boat in aurora
we're sitting there....... .capping,having some beers.(me a few,rosie more!)..enjoying a fri. nite after a long week of work
we're looking at a race at santa anita....trying to come up with a plan on how to bet the race?
last thing i say..is.."you know this is just the kind a race that iggy can win?"(iggy being the jockey, iggy puglisi is his name)
i might also add.....that rosie ....hates west coast tracks
we finally figure what to do......i bet the exacta, tri
rosie does ....also
i asked rosie......("well....how did you hedge it?)
the sob hedges it with a dollar straight super bet
naturally it hits...i'm happy as hell.i got the exacta and tri
rosie is pounding me and asks what was the 4th horse....what was the 4th horse?
i 'll tell him.......he hit the damned super on a STRAIGHT 1.00 bet
happy as hell
i asked him.."well how do ya like west coast racing now?"
he still......says he doesnt like it
just like a bdh ...huh?
never satisfied.......lol

Honest to god Dave I remember that like it was yesterday good old Aurora.

Remember at OTB by the track when I hit the tri and they made the race "official" huge money and then out of the clouds they put up the objection sign after the race was official!! With prices I might add!
Incredibly they changed the results and I lost! I still remember all the clowns grabbing the garbage bags from the garbage cans running out of the place like Santa Claus. Wonder how many winners they found that folks threw away thinking they lost. I still dont believe it
Should of quit betting back then but no not me.  Think I could of retired already if I would of

That is just sick Dave!!  You only need one play a year like that to get some serious bullets jesus christ what a shame.

64.20  28.20  13.60

 2,000+ exacta

18,000+ trifecta for a dollar!!!    Ref just so you knoiw it would of cost you $216 dollars to put the horse in all three spots in the tri for a dollar to catch that price. Ive said it before thats how you beat the horses with these gimmicks. Actually makes my stomach turn when this happens and I know yours did as well as then pencil went flying across the room with the words " you got to be fricken kidding me"
Lets not even mention what the superfecta paid, okay

Here's a sob story for you guys. I got a buddy who trains harness horses for a living. Well I have them on my watch list and bet them when they run. Friday night he had 2 in at Maywood. Well I get all sloppy Friday afternoon and say fuck it I'm not going to play them this time. You guessed it  came in and paid big and I mean big.
First one paid 24.40  10.60  28.20 YES 28.20 how about that for the show pool.
Second paid 27.40 9.00 5.00. Those vodka tonics I had while playing gin sure did me in this time
