I've been looking at the sportsdatabase.com site (which gets mentioned here on TalkSport from time to time) to see how well it agrees with our WinPicks software.  I was hoping to use it to check/validate some of our own data.  However, unless I am doing something wrong, it seems to be missing a lot of games.

For example, try this query, which I believe I picked up from a post here during basketball season:

http://sportsdatabase.com/nba.py/query?text=date%3E%3D20060106+and+p%3Aline+%3C+0+and+site%3Dhome+and+p%3Amargin%3C-9+and+rest%3E1&=1&submit=query

Condition

"date>=20060106 and p:line < 0 and site=home and p:margin<-9 and rest>1"

The system would be:

The system is to play on a home team that has more than one days rest and is off a double digit loss as a FAV

When I run that report, I see only three games where the Nuggets meet their criteria.   Our database finds 11 games.  Is there something wrong with my query, or is sportsdatabase.com missing a lot of games?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

Mike,
I'm not a user of that.  The guys that do hang out in the football, hoops and even baseball too (Player for one).

Let's see if anyone picks up on your post down here in the subforum

THAT is a VERY good NBA trend, IF i understand you RIGHT the specifics ARE:

SINCE JAN 6  2006:  play any HOME team coming off a SU LOSS of 10 OR more as FAV, with 2 or MORE days rest,,,see LINK below for OVERALL trend of 47-19 ATS, do YOU come up with THAT (or SIMILAR) result with WIN PICKS???

http://sportsdatabase.com/nba.py/query?text=20060106%3C%3Ddate+and+H+and+rest%3E%3D2+and+p%3Amargin%3C%3D-10+and+p%3AF&=1&submit=query

THEN we add     TEAM      to the Query to break down WHAT each team's record IS with that trend, see list of teams, scroll down for NUGGETS AND yes WE do have DENVER with just 3 games,,,IF you have DENVER with 11 games, send me a LIST of those OTHER 8 games,,,see LINK below

Player,

WinPicks does come up with similar results, our data is showing 49-21-3 for the same trend.

However, the days rest conditional in Sports Database seems to be off.    I would assume the "rest>=2" part of the query on Sports Database would include games where the previous game date was exactly 2 days prior to the current game date.    Sports Database ignores games where the previous game was 2 days prior.

In order to get a similar match, we have to set the Days Rest condition in WinPicks to "more than 2 days".     If we do that, the same 3 Nuggets games show up.

After looking at the results of what WinPicks finds, the additional Nuggets games (8 in all) all happen to be when the previous game is exactly 2 days prior to the current game.

These games are all when "rest > 1" in WinPicks:

2006/03/01 (Wed.) Detroit Pistons 98-87 4.5 WON 189.0 UNDER
2006/03/31 (Fri.) Minnesota Timberwolves 106-94 -8.0 WON 197.0 OVER
2006/04/17 (Mon.) Houston Rockets 83-86 -9.5 LOST 188.0 UNDER
2006/12/31 (Sun.) Dallas Mavericks 85-89 5.5 WON 207.0 UNDER
2007/01/29 (Mon.) Charlotte Bobcats 101-105 -10.5 LOST 213.0 UNDER
2007/03/06 (Tue.) New Orleans Hornets 106-91 -6.5 WON 207.0 UNDER
2007/04/16 (Mon.) Minnesota Timberwolves 122-107 -13.5 WON 219.0 OVER
2007/11/23 (Fri.) Minnesota Timberwolves 99-93 -14.0 LOST 206.5 UNDER
2007/12/20 (Thu.) Houston Rockets 112-111 -8.0 LOST 198.5 OVER
2008/01/03 (Thu.) San Antonio Spurs 80-77 -2.0 WON 198.5 UNDER
2008/04/28 (Mon.) Los Angeles (Lk) Lakers 101-107 4.5 LOST 225.5 UNDER

And these games are when "rest > 2" in WinPicks, and where similar results are obtained:

2007/03/06 (Tue.) New Orleans Hornets 106-91 -6.5 WON 207.0 UNDER
2007/12/20 (Thu.) Houston Rockets 112-111 -8.0 LOST 198.5 OVER
2008/01/03 (Thu.) San Antonio Spurs 80-77 -2.0 WON 198.5 UNDER

=YUPP, i think you're correct about the definition of 'REST',,,,looking at your  FIRST game with DENVER on 03/01/2006, DENVERS last game BEFORE that was on 2/27/06,,,they did NOT play on 2/28/06 the last day in FEB (ONE Days rest), then DID play on 03/01/06, and MTI database shows that as ONE DAYS rest,,,when i changed the the text to read   rest>=1    which means rest is ONE (= sign) or MORE (> sign) days, the remaining 8 games DO show up for DENVER but the integrity of the trend is destroyed, note 5-5-1 ATS

Indeed, Sportsdatabase.com defines the rest=0 condition as when a team has no days off between games. That is, they play on consecutive days.

The winpicks software defines the "rest" as the days between games not the days OFF between games. So, there is a one game conversion factor between the two systems. In basketball, a rest of zero on the winpicks platform would be a double-header.

I hope we get more comparisons between the two ways to investigate past results in sports. The more ammunition we have, the better we'll all do.

Dr M.
